Abanilla
The miraculous apparition of Our Lady and Vera Cruz of Abanilla in the district of Mahoya is the origin of these patron saint festivities. Faith and devotion mark the start of the traditional Romería (Religious pilgrimage) that, currently, is one of the most important festivities in the East of Spain. The access to posts like "Captains", "Lieutenant", "Sergeant" and "Cabin Boy", vital figures of these festivities, is through an auction. Apart from the acts in honour of the Cross, there are some Moors and Christians celebrations completing this way these festivities, which are worth a visit.

A lo largo de 2026, Abanilla vivirá un completo programa de celebraciones religiosas, culturales y sociales en torno a la Santísima Cruz. Los fieles podrán obtener la Indulgencia Plenaria peregrinando a la Parroquia de San José y participando en las solemnidades más significativas del calendario jubilar: -1 de febrero: Apertura del Año Jubilar. -19 de marzo: Solemnidad de San José. -3 de mayo: Invención de la Santa Cruz. - 12 de junio: Solemnidad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. - 26 de julio: Solemnidad de Santa Joaquina y Santa Ana. -14 de septiembre: Exaltación de la Santa Cruz. -7 de octubre: Solemnidad de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. -1 de noviembre: Solemnidad de todos los Santos. - 8 de diciembre: Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y Clausura del Año Jubilar. Además, durante todo el año se celebrarán: -Peregrinaciones y encuentros jubilares en la Parroquia de San José. -Conciertos, exposiciones y jornadas culturales. -Difusión de la historia, la tradición y el patrimonio de Abanilla -Actividades populares y festivas vinculadas a la huerta, el río Chícamo y la identidad de nuestro pueblo.

Bajo el amparo de la Santísima Cruz, Abanilla se dispone a vivir un hito histórico. La Hermandad de la Santísima Cruz de Abanilla junto al Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Abanilla invita a todos los fieles, devotos y pueblo en general a la Solemne Eucaristía de Apertura del Año Jubilar, que tendrá lugar el próximo domingo 1 de febrero a las 12:00 horas en la Iglesia Parroquia San José de Abanilla. La celebración estará presidida por el Excmo. y Rvdmo. Mons. D. José Manuel Lorca Planes, Obispo de la Diócesis de Cartagena - España, y contará con acompañamiento musical de la Coral Discantus de Murcia.

The Town Hall is a civil building of the 18th century, which was built between 1751 and 1762 during the reign of Ferdinand VI of Spain. This building preserves the windows, iron fittings and mouldings from that period. It worked as a royal prison and granary, whose access door has been recently discovered in the south after a renovation of the facade. Its interior is functional and mainly for administrative use. Its facade and surroundings are also relevant.

A Manorial house from the 17th century where the Commander of the Calatrava Order resided and administered the taxes which were paid to the Casa de la Encomienda. Later on, with the confiscations that occurred during the time, the Casa Cabrera changed to private hands until the present day. On its splendid facade, in a very rich Baroque style, lies the Cabreras coat of arms (hence the name) and a small image of the Virgen de las Angustias. Originally it occupied the entire block, which was about 1800 m from the current 600 m. Behind its walls there were gardens, chapels, burials and even well concealed hideouts, as well as a passageway which led to the church.

The Casa de la Encomienda was the place where the Commander of the Order of Calatrava collected taxes and the tithe from the locals. It also went by the name “Casa del Infante”, the probable reason being was because of the infante John of Austria the Younger (the illegitimate son of Philip IV of Spain) and step-brother to Charles II of Spain. Charles II was prime-minister, commander in chief and also the commander of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God. Since the building’s construction ought to have been completed during his tenure, it obtained the name of Casa del Infante. The two-floor building can be seen from two different areas: the northern side is vaulted and the other flat. In the basement of the vaulted ground floor there were some earthen jars measuring a meter and a half high, in where cereals, wine and oil from the tithes that La Encomienda received were kept.

A Manorial house dating back to the 16th century called Pintada (‘Painted’) due to the intense color of its facade. It stands out with its rectangular frieze cover, pinnacles and the blazon of the family. The columns of the windows are subsequent to the rest of the facade, dating from the early 20th century.

El Centro de Interpretación Paleontológico Sierra de Quibas fue inaugurado el 26 se junio de 2009, está emplazado en el hall del Auditorio Municipal de Abanilla y se trata de una exposición permanente dónde se da a conocer la historia del yacimiento (situado en la Sierra de Quibas), su contexto geológico, la estructura del proyecto científico y el equipo que llevó a cabo las primeras excavaciones, así como la presentación de las especies de mamíferos más significativas identificadas. El yacimiento ha proporcionado fósiles de más de 60 especies distintas entre vertebrados e invertebrados, algunas de ellas con un registro fósil muy completo y abundante. De esta forma, Quibas se convierte en una referencia en el panorama europeo por la cantidad de restos de macacos hallados y fósiles de praeovibos (antepasado del buey). La mayoría de restos identificados corresponden a animales poco conocidos que habitaron el sureste peninsular al inicio del Pleistoceno, hace aproximadamente 1.3 millones de años.
