San Javier: the hercUlean way (english guided tour)
SAN JAVIER "The Vía Herculea"Guided tour starts at the San Javier Museum, where we can learn about the town's history from the early days as well as knowing the life of illustrious people born in the municipality. The different objects exhibited there, such as an airplane donated by the San Javier Air Base, will take us on a journey through the past. The Nativity Scene (Belén), one of the main tourist attractions in San Javier as well as a tradition with deep roots in the whole Region, is featured at the museum. After leaving the museum we will have a walk to the parish church of Saint Francis Xavier, one of the first churches built in the Mar Menor area. The temple houses several works of art by renowned artists, like the sculptor Sánchez Lozano or the painter Muñoz Barberán. Strolling on we arrive at the Almansa Park, located on the former Tomás Maestre estate. Nowadays this park is a cultural landmark in the municipality, where important festivals such as the International Jazz Festival and the Interantional Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance are held.

VISITA CON UN ARQUEÓLOGO QUE EXCAVA Y ESTUDIA LA SIMA DE LAS PALOMAS. RESULTADOS Y HALLAZGOS DE LA INTERVENCIÓN Y CONSERVACIÓN ARQUEOLÓGICA DE ESTE YACIMIENTO. El objetivo de la actividad es dar a conocer las últimas actuaciones arqueológicas que se están llevando a cabo en el yacimiento, descubierto en 1991. Hoy en día, la Sima de las Palomas es indudablemente el yacimiento del Hombre de Neanderthal más importante del arco mediterráneo español y el segundo en importancia sobre el Hombre Fósil en la Península Ibérica, después de Atapuerca. La Sima de las Palomas se ubica en la ladera sur del Cabezo Gordo, Paisaje Protegido que tiene un gran interés biótico, paisajístico, paleontológico y cultural. Se subirá a un mirador donde se encuentra el yacimiento paleantropológico. Desde este estratégico lugar, se divisan los cultivos del Campo de Cartagena. La entrada está a unos 80 m. sobre el nivel del mar y permite una bonita vista panorámica del Mar Menor, laguna salada más grande de Europa. Además, se visitará la Cueva del Agua, antigua mina con un lago de agua natural donde habitan en la actualidad 5 especies diferentes de murciélagos.
