Museums

Alhama de Murcia

Temporarily closed for renovation work, efficiency improvements and museum digitisation, The Museo Arqueológico de Los Baños is an on-site museum, created to preserve and protect the archaeological remains of the Baths of Alhama de Murcia. Its restoration and development has meant an important contribution to the study of hydrotherapy and its architecture throughout different periods of its history. The thermal complex has restored its original areas through a series of renovation projects and adaptations, creating a modern building, a garden area with water at the forefront and the inside museological preservation of the remains, showing thematic sections about different cultures. Its architecture is an example of conservation of heritage, in the same complex, from Roman rooms, to their reuse in the Islamic and Christian periods, until the construction of the new Hotel Spa in the 19th century. In 1983 its archaeological remains were declared a Historical Artistic Monument of National Character and in May 2008 it was included in the Region of Murcia’s Museum Network. The Museum hosts the Archaeological Collection and Municipal Ethnographic of Alhama.

Natural areas

Alhama de Murcia
Librilla

Do you want to know what the landscape of the moon looks like without leaving the Earth? Come to the Barrancos de Gebas (gorges), in the centre of the Region of Murcia between the municipalities of Alhama de Murcia and Librilla. This protected natural area stuns visitors with its colours, shapes, contrasts, nature and history, impressing all who tread its stark slopes, with the waters of the Algeciras Reservoir in the background. The Barrancos de Gebas stand as a counterpoint to the environmental contrasts of the Peninsula’s southeast. Few places feature forests as dense as that of the Sierra Espuña, not far from the sub-desert landscape of Gebas. Despite appearances, the area is home to communities of fauna and flora fascinating for how they have adapted to survive under very difficult conditions of low rainfall and intense sunshine. Thanks to all these elements, the Barrancos de Gebas was declared a Protected Landscape in 1995. In addition, their great geological and geomorphological value means that they represent one of the finest examples of badlands in the Region of Murcia, leading to their classification as a Site of Geological Interest (LIG). Alhama de Murcia

Casa de la Tercia is a barn-house located in calle Larga, and built in 1755 by order of the Marquis of los Vélez to store a third of the harvest of all grain produced in this town. Its coat of arms is declared a Heritage of Cultural Interest This is a building characterized by its simplicity of architectural forms. It is two storeys high raised with brick walls and masonry. The floor plan is square, and it is structured around four pillars that take up the central area, covered with nine sections of ribbed vault. The wooden door studded with metal ornaments, is placed in the front of the building, and it is framed with lintel, and windows that light up the building are latticed with rigorous symmetry. In its front highlights the coat of arms of the Marquisate of Villafranca and los Vélez, which was declared a BIC and as the unique decorative element of the facade. In the early 20th century, Casa de la Tercia was used as a school for theater performances and other cultural activities. Today, it is waiting to be restored. At the bottom of the coat of arms we can notice an inscription that reads: "This barn-house, property of his Excellency the Marquis of Villafranca and Vélez, was built being the General Administrator of this town Mr. Silvestre Álvarez de Mora. Year of 1755".
