Region of Murcia: where culture is lived, savoured and loved

The Region of Murcia is one of the most surprising and undiscovered cultural destinations on Spain's Mediterranean coast. Four ancient cities preserve the legacy of Phoenician, Roman, Arab and Christian civilisations in a land where historic heritage lives side by side with vibrant traditions, moving festivals and a gastronomy that expresses the true character of every town and every era.

From Cartagena's Roman Theatre to the Baroque Cathedral of Murcia, from the Fortress of the Sun in Lorca to the Castle-Basilica of Vera Cruz in Caravaca "one of the five holy cities in the world" every step in this region is a journey through centuries of history, served with the warmth of the Mediterranean.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, two seas, mountain ranges, fertile fields and a light that bathes everything. Here, culture is enjoyed outdoors all year round.

Now this is true happiness.

Murcia - Baroque, local produce and joie de vivre

The regional capital, Murcia, surprises visitors with one of the most spectacular Baroque façades in Europe at its Cathedral, the modernist splendour of the Real Casino, and the living legacy of the Al-Andalus agricultural landscape that surround the city. Its Easter celebrations and the Bando de la Huerta festival "both recognised as events of International Tourist Interest" fill the streets with excitement and tradition. Meanwhile, in its bars and terraces, the famous pastel de carne, marineras and paparajotes tell the story of a city that celebrates life one dish at a time.

Gastronomic identity: Cuisine rooted in the fertile fields of the Al-Andalus era. Hearty dishes and recipes that reflect the balance between the land and the Mediterranean sun.

Cartagena - Three thousand years of history by the sea

A city with more than three millennia of history and a true jewel of the Mediterranean, Cartagena preserves one of Spain's most important archaeological ensembles: the Roman Theatre, the Forum District, the Punic Wall and the ARQUA National Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Its modernist historic centre and its harbour, always open to the world, complete a truly unique cultural experience. At the table, caldero rice, salted fish specialities and the iconic asiático coffee reflect the flavours of a city shaped by civilisations and tides.

Gastronomic identity: Seafood cuisine, with Punic and Roman influences. Flavours of the sea, salted fish specialities, fishermen's stews and produce from the Cartagena countryside.

Lorca - A monumental city embroidered in gold thread

Crowned by the Fortress of the Sun, Lorca preserves a historic centre declared a Historic-Artistic Site, with Renaissance palaces, Baroque churches and the legacy of three cultures. Its Easter celebrations, recognised as being of International Tourist Interest, are unique in the world for their silk and gold embroidery and processional floats that are true works of art. At the table, crespillos lorquinos, migas ruleras and grilled lamb reflect a cuisine shaped by the meeting of mountains and countryside.

Gastronomic identity: Inland cuisine rooted in pastoral and mountain traditions. A frontier gastronomy between Andalusia and Murcia, with a strong presence of meats, wheat and dryland produce.

Caravaca de la Cruz - A Holy City with a Perpetual Jubilee

One of the five holy cities in the world, Caravaca holds the privilege of a Perpetual Jubilee granted by the Holy See. Its Castle-Basilica of Vera Cruz crowns a historic centre filled with churches, convents and palaces with a Templar legacy. The Caballos del Vino (Wine Horses), recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the Fiestas de la Cruz transform the city each May into an unforgettable spectacle. Its mountain cuisine features Segureño lamb, convent sweets and wines from the Bullas D.O.

Gastronomic identity: Festive mountain cuisine with influences from La Mancha and nearby Cehegín. Pilgrimage traditions, wood-fired ovens and recipes from convent kitchens.
